The Challenge

This is a second-generation company. The owner took it over from his father in 2007 and built it the way that generation built businesses: referrals, repeat clients, friends of friends. It worked, but as he puts it, that network "only gets so big." There are no more yellow pages, and if you're on page seven of Google, you don't exist.

The deeper problem was seasonality. New England landscape work is all-or-nothing: a spring rush that buries you, then stretches where the phone goes quiet. He didn't need more chaos in April. He needed the phone ringing in the slow months, and a way to be choosier about which jobs he took the rest of the year.

The Strategy

He came onto our Starter Growth Program, the entry point built around paid lead flow and lead capture:

  1. Campaigns built around his trades and his townships. Google Ads and Local Services Ads targeting landscape design, new lawn installs, and commercial snow removal, only in the towns he actually serves.
  2. Specialist positioning. He wanted more hydroseeding work, so we built a dedicated hydroseeding campaign and landing page using his own project photos. When a homeowner searching that service lands on a page from the local specialist, the competition stops mattering.
  3. JBL Connect on the website and Google Business Profile. Every inquiry, from ads, the website, or the profile, fires an instant text and email, and lands in one system with automated follow-up. In his words: instead of going to three different places, "there's always a history of people I spoke with six months ago. I can go back and find them if need be."
  4. The feedback loop that makes ads smarter. Standard in every Growth Program: the CRM reports back to Google when a lead books an estimate and when the job is sold, so the ad platforms optimize for people who actually hire.
  5. Spend managed to the calendar. When his schedule filled up, we paused. When snow season approached, we pushed the commercial snow campaigns. He paid for leads when he could use leads, not twelve months of set-and-forget billing.

The Results

Cheap, qualified, local leads. Local Services leads averaged roughly $25 each across the window, with the best months under $15. These are phone calls from homeowners in his service area, screened by Google, for the exact trades he sells.

Local Services cost per lead by month averaging about 25 dollars for a North Boston landscape construction company

A 700-contact database. Around 700 contacts flowed into the CRM over the snapshot, every one with history attached. That's not just lead flow, it's an owned asset: a list he can email offers to for free, forever, whatever happens with ads.

Selectivity, the quiet ROI. Steady inquiry volume changed how he sells. He books work a month or two out, passes on poor-fit jobs, and focuses on what the company is best at. Lead flow isn't just about more work, it's about better work.

The ROI Math

The investment: roughly $1,600 per month all-in, program and ad spend combined. About $26,000 over the snapshot window.

The return: ~700 CRM contacts, filtered conservatively (counting only ~60% as genuine service inquiries, applying our attribution framework's 60% call-weighted attribution and 80% confidence factor, a 15% close rate, and a $6,000 weighted average job, well below his larger hardscape projects), that's an estimated $180K+ in generated work, a 6x+ return on every marketing dollar.

The owner's math is simpler. Asked what he'd tell another contractor: "It will pay for itself. And down the road, you're making all these contacts at the same time. The sky's the limit. If you're just sitting there at home waiting for your phone to ring with no internet presence, you're missing out, because everyone else is doing it."

Marketing investment of 26K dollars versus 180K dollars in estimated work generated, a 6x return

In Their Words

"Before, I relied mostly on referrals, which were hit or miss, but now I'm consistently getting new leads from Google Ads, Local Services, and my website... One of the biggest wins for me has been the hydroseeding campaign. They built out a landing page, ads, and used my project photos to position me as a specialist, which really set me apart in my area. It's brought in a steady flow of quality jobs and allowed me to be more selective about the projects I take on instead of chasing work I don't really want."

"When you have all the possible leads in your pocket, you can pick and choose. I can be a little bit more selective. I don't have to chase jobs that normally I wouldn't want to."

The Takeaway

This is what the entry point of our Growth Programs does: paid lead flow aimed at the right trades in the right towns, a specialist position competitors can't match, and a CRM that captures every inquiry into an asset the client owns. No twelve-month ad bills for a seasonal business, spend that follows the calendar, and math that pays for itself.

This is our Starter Growth Program. If your phone goes quiet between seasons, let's fix that.
