The Challenge

Backyard design-build in Orange County is a high-ticket, high-scrutiny market. Homeowners planning a $20K to $100K+ outdoor project research everything: your reviews, your videos, your projects. Being invisible in that research phase means the project goes to whoever isn't.

This company had also experienced the other kind of agency firsthand: one that generated barely any leads, kept billing through months of cancellation attempts, and held admin access to the ad account so the client couldn't even control their own asset when they left. That experience shaped how we structured everything.

The Strategy

They came onto our Starter Growth Program, built around paid lead flow that the client owns:

  1. The ad account belongs to the client. Every account we build is set up with the client as owner. It's their asset, their data, their history. If we ever part ways, everything stays with them. After what this client went through elsewhere, that mattered.
  2. Campaigns for a considered purchase. Google Ads built around a free design consultation offer, because nobody impulse-buys a backyard remodel, plus Local Services Ads for Google-screened calls, and retargeting campaigns that stayed in front of homeowners who had visited but hadn't called yet.
  3. JBL Connect on every inquiry. Calls, forms, and messages captured in one system with automated follow-up, and lead quality graded back to Google so the algorithm learns which callers become projects.
  4. The feedback loop that makes ads smarter. Standard in every Growth Program: the CRM reports back to Google when a lead books an estimate and when a job is sold, so the platform optimizes for buyers, not clicks.

The Results

A lead engine in a market where each lead is worth chasing. More than 280 tracked leads over the snapshot window, with Local Services averaging roughly $126 per Google-screened phone call. In a market where a single closed project runs five to six figures, that math works hard.

Local Services leads per month for an Orange County backyard design-build company, finishing at a record 19 leads

Still accelerating. The final quarter shown was the strongest stretch on record: 17, 17, then 19 Local Services leads in a month, the best month of the entire window. Lead engines built on real conversion data get better with age, not worse.

Real projects, tracked to the source. From the client's own words on a recorded check-in call:

"We did land a fountain project... That came from Google Ads, and that was $13,000."

"I think our cost per conversion is starting to decrease, and I think we're just getting better every month."

The ROI Math

The investment: program and ad spend combined, roughly $69,000 over the 20-month snapshot.

The return: 280+ tracked leads, run through our conservative attribution framework (70 to 90% attribution on platform-tracked leads, an 80% confidence factor, a 15% close rate, and a $15,000 weighted average project, well below their larger backyard remodels), that's an estimated $350K+ in generated work, a 5x+ return on every marketing dollar.

We publish the math because we would defend these numbers to the client's accountant: real platform lead counts, conservative assumptions, and deals traced in the CRM.

Marketing investment of 69K dollars versus 350K dollars in estimated work generated, a 5x return

The Takeaway

High-ticket contractors don't need a flood of leads. They need a steady flow of qualified, local, trackable ones, at a cost that makes sense against five-figure projects, in an account they own. That's what a properly built paid program does, and it compounds: the last month of this snapshot was the best one.

This is our Starter Growth Program. If your projects are high-ticket and your lead flow isn't, let's fix that.
